Is Your SEO Agency Actually Working? 9 Signs to Check Yourself

By Ignite Marketing Team4 min read

You're paying an agency every month, you get a report full of charts, and yet the phone doesn't seem to ring any more than it used to. Sound familiar? You're not alone, and you don't need to be an SEO expert to find out whether your investment is working.

Here are nine things you can check yourself, most of them in under 10 minutes.

1. You can see real business results, not just "rankings"

Rankings and impressions are nice, but they don't pay the bills. A good agency connects its work to things you care about: phone calls, form submissions, booked jobs and revenue. If your monthly report never mentions calls or customers, ask why.

Check it: Open your Google Business Profile and look at the Performance section for calls, direction requests and website clicks over the last few months. Is the trend going up?

2. Your Google Business Profile is active

For local businesses, your Google Business Profile often brings in more calls than your website. An active profile has fresh photos, regular posts, up-to-date hours and replies to reviews.

Check it: Search your business name on Google. When was the last post? Are your newest reviews answered? If your profile looks untouched for months, it probably is.

3. They've added or improved pages on your website

SEO work leaves visible fingerprints: new service pages, city or service-area pages, improved page titles, new blog articles, faster load times. If your website looks exactly the same as it did six months ago, very little SEO has happened.

Check it: Ask your agency for a list of every page they created or changed last month, with links.

4. You're showing up for the searches that matter

It's easy to rank for your own business name or for obscure phrases nobody searches. What matters is showing up for searches your customers actually type, like "[your service] near me" or "[your service] in [your city]."

Check it: On your phone, search for your main service plus your city. Where do you appear on the map and in the results? Try it from a few different locations in your service area.

5. You have access to your own data

You should be able to log in to your own Google Search Console, Google Analytics and Google Business Profile at any time. Search Console in particular shows which searches bring people to your site and whether clicks are growing.

Check it: Do you have logins? If your agency says only they can access your accounts, that's a red flag.

6. You own your website and accounts

Your website, domain, content, Google Business Profile and ad accounts should be in your name. Some agencies keep ownership, so if you leave, you lose everything and start from scratch.

Check it: Look at who the domain is registered to and who the "primary owner" is on your Google Business Profile. It should be you.

7. Reports are clear, honest and explain what's next

A useful report answers three questions in plain English: What did you do? What happened? What are you doing next? A 30-page PDF of jargon and screenshots, with no clear next steps, usually hides a lack of progress.

8. They explain setbacks instead of hiding them

Rankings go up and down, and Google updates happen. A trustworthy agency tells you when something drops, explains why, and tells you what they're doing about it before you have to ask.

9. You're not stuck in a long contract

Long lock-in contracts remove the agency's reason to keep earning your business. If you're 3 months into a 12-month contract with no progress, you have little leverage.

Check it: Read your agreement for the notice period and early-termination fees.

How long should SEO take to show results?

Most local businesses should see early signs of progress within 2–3 months (more impressions, better map positions for some searches, more profile activity) and meaningful growth in calls within about 4–6 months, depending on competition and where you started. If you're past six months with nothing to show and no clear explanation, it's time for a hard conversation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my SEO agency is doing anything?

Ask for a list of the specific work done each month (pages created or improved, Google Business Profile posts, technical fixes and reviews), with links. Then check your Google Business Profile Performance section and Google Search Console for growth in calls, clicks and searches. Real work leaves visible results.

How long before SEO should show results?

Most local businesses see early progress within 2–3 months and meaningful growth in calls within about 4–6 months. Highly competitive markets and brand-new websites can take longer.

Who should own my website and Google Business Profile?

You should. Your domain, website, content, Google Business Profile and ad accounts should be in your name, so you keep everything if you ever change agencies.

Is it normal for SEO agencies to require long contracts?

Many agencies ask for 6–12 month contracts, but it isn't required. Month-to-month agreements are available, and they keep an agency focused on earning your business every month.

What should an SEO report include?

A clear summary of the work completed, results tied to business goals such as calls, form submissions and website visits, how rankings for your main services changed, and the plan for next month, all in plain English.
